Federer-Nadal Final in the U.S. Open this Sunday Night?

September 9th, 2009

Roger Federer so consistently captures a semifinal slot in Grand Slam tournaments that it is almost as certain as death and taxes. Since Wimbledon in 2004, Federer has reached 21 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals and 18 finals, capturing 13 singles titles. In effect, every other man is competing for three semifinal and one final spot.

Meanwhile, before Rafael Nadal’s knee woes in this year’s French Open, he had reached nine semifinals in 12 Grand Slam events, including seven finals and five titles. So the brackets at the far end of the draw really should bear a “Reserved” sign. Federer and Nadal have claimed 19 of the last 21 Grand Slam men’s singles titles and 20 of the 28 final slots in the last 14 Grand Slam tournaments.

It’s the toughest time to be a secondary contender. Imagine being among the world’s top 10 or 12 tennis players, yet the odds strongly dictate you will not win or reach the finals and only half the final four is available and that depends on not running into Federer or Nadal earlier in the draw.

Now that both players are in the final 8 and opposite ends of the draw, it’s highly likely that we’ll see another Federer-Nadal Final!
